Food Service

Our team of Registered Sanitarians conduct unannounced routine inspections of all licensed food establishments including restaurants, bars, delis, grocery stores, schools, and long term care facilities located in Cheshire, Wolcott and Prospect. These inspections, along with education, help to protect the public from food-borne illnesses.

Food-Borne Illness

Food-borne illnesses are a serious problem in the United States. The Center for Disease Control estimates that each year, roughly 1 in 6 Americans get sick from the food they eat. Approximately 128,000 are hospitalized and 3,000 die from food-borne diseases each year. Nearly 80% of food-borne illnesses are traced to food prepared in licensed facilities. Thus, it is extremely important to routinely inspect these facilities located in our district. The elderly, very young, individuals with compromised immune systems and those who are pregnant are at higher risk of getting food-borne illnesses.

Consumers can help by reporting unsanitary practices observed in food service operations to Chesprocott at 203-272-2761.
